  25. Icebreaking near Port of Thunder Bay, Ontario

    The Canadian Coast Guard advises residents of Thunder Bay, Ontario that the CCGS Samuel Risley will carry out icebreaking operations in the area on or around March 22, 2024. The purpose of this operation is to break up the ice to allow commercial vessels safe and efficient movement.

    Our search and rescue stations on the Great Lakes are open for the season. Remember that waterways remain very cold at this time of year and take much longer to warm up than the air. Make sure to be safe when out on the water.

    The new Aroland First Nation Elders Lodge (ᑭᒋᐦᐊᐧᐃᑲᒥᒃ), will provide Elders in the community with a comfortable place to call home and live independently while receiving needed care. The federal government is supporting this lodge with an investment of over $20.5 million from the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings (GICB) program.

  28. Past, present and future unite in the Corleck Building

    The historic Canada Maltings administrative office in Eireann Quay will undergo a major restoration and renovation through an investment of more than $4.5 million from the federal government. The project is also being funded by the Government of Ireland and the Canada Ireland Foundation.

    The federal government is investing $8,402,140 through the Public Transit Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program to support 9 transit projects. The Government of Ontario is contributing $6,489,680 and the City of Thunder Bay is contributing over $4,579,526.

    On March 12, 2024, Public Safety Canada announced a federal investment of $195,231 over three years to King’s College London to expand their Repository of Extremist Aligned Documents (READ). This funding was made possible through the Community Resilience Fund (CRF).

  45. Canadian and United States Coast Guards recommit to close partnership on Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River during Minister Lebouthillier’s U.S. visit

    The Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard, met today with Commandant Admiral Linda L. Fagan at the United States Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C., to discuss the close partnership between the two coast guards on maritime safety and protection. This visit comes on the heels of the Canadian and United States Coast Guards signing an updated Memorandum of Understanding on February 15, 2024, renewing the two organizations’ coordination of icebreaking and buoy tending operations on the Great Lakes, connecting waterways, and the shared portion of the St. Lawrence River.
